Narrow Devon lanes are usually the hardest constraint, so start there rather than with the vehicle itself. Once you know whether a larger van can physically reach your destination, matching seats to cargo and settling the paperwork becomes far simpler. This field guide works through those decisions in order of difficulty.
Vehicle fit: seats, cargo and the lane between them
A crew van solves the obvious problem of carrying five people, yet the second row eats into load depth, so measure the bulkiest item before choosing a body style. Then picture the route: overhanging hedgerows, tight junctions and short driveways all punish a tall roof or long wheelbase. If access looks marginal, a smaller van with a trailer, or two vehicles, may beat one cumbersome unit.
Timing: when the fleet and your diary meet
Demand for vans shifts with the seasons and the working week, particularly around weekends when removals and DIY projects cluster. Build in a buffer for loading, and think about whether you genuinely need the vehicle overnight or whether a shorter window will do. If your return might slip past closing time, raise out-of-hours drop-off now rather than on the phone in a layby.
Booking terms: deposits, insurance and refuelling
Read the small print before you commit. Confirm what the deposit covers, whether insurance includes the drivers you plan to name, and what fuel level the vehicle should come back with. Licence conditions and any age-related requirements vary between providers, so check them against your nominated driver's record. Clarifying these points upfront costs nothing and prevents disputes later.
Enquiry details: what to have ready when you call
Prepare a short list before contacting the desk: your dates, the number of seats needed, the rough dimensions of the load, and where the van will be parked. Mention anything unusual, such as a low car park barrier or a first-time commercial vehicle driver, so the supplier can steer you towards a suitable model and flag any restrictions in advance.
Questions before you book
What is the first thing to check before hiring a van in Cornwood?
Whether the vehicle size you need can actually reach your destination, since rural access issues are harder to fix than seat counts or load space.
Which details should I confirm with the supplier before booking?
Deposit arrangements, insurance cover for each named driver, refuelling expectations, and collection and drop-off windows, all confirmed in writing where possible.
